Buttons are almost as old as civilization itself, but they were used primarily for decorative purposes until the 13th century, when the invention of the buttonhole CHANGED EVERYTHING. The single-centimeter, four-hole cast button was adopted as a standard component in men's shirting around the turn of the last century.  Its small size, universal shape, and pre-existing holes all lent themselves to being strung on a delicate 21" chain and re-purposed as a beautiful, simple necklace.  Available in sterling silver and gold-plated brass. The sterling silver button comes with a silver chain, and the gold plated version is paired with a gold-filled chain.
