This gorgeous cameo ring has an slightly unusual appearance due to the grade of silver that was used to make it. So-called "800" silver, while still of excellent quality, is a slightly lower purity that the American or British "sterling" standard of .925. Eastern European countries like Austria and Germany both produce silver of the former variety, so this ring probably was made in one of the two countries sometime in the late 1800s. The shiny carved surface of the cameo set in the ring indicates that its coral, an organic substance prized in 19th-century jewelry, especially in the light pinkish hue of this particular example. This ring is a US size 7 and cannot be re-sized.
