“French jet”- actually very dark black glass - became the go-to material for producing modestly-priced mourning jewelry during the late Victorian era. It was a reasonably affordable alternative to the popular jet, a form of fossilized wood mined in the seaside Yorkshire town of Whitby. This striking collar features faceted hexagonal links on French jet strung on heavy cotton cord.
