Black Twisted Bows
$25
Shoe clips were first manufactured in the ornament-obsessed Victorian era, when instead of buying multiple pairs of shoes, women dressed up their plain footwear with an endless variety of detachable bows, buckles, and jewels. Flappers played croquet in rhinestone pairs, fast-talking female reporters clipped them onto their oxfords and Audrey Hepburn used all kinds to embellish her black ballet flats. We've bought up a huge stock of different styles that were probably manufactured in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Each pair is carefully attached to our own card, which was inspired by Edwardian-era button packaging. Each one of these deceptively simple black "bows" is made of one long strip of fabric that's been twisted into a domed knot. They remind me of some of the experiments with shape and volume that were happening in the 1940's and earlier: Madeleine Vionnet and Coco Chanel would have worn these for sure.
