According to myth, Neptune rewarded the dolphin for finding and persuading his beloved Salacia to be his wife by giving it a place in the heavens - the constellation Delphinus. In early Christian belief, the dolphin symbolized resurrection and salvation. Fibulas like this one were commonly used to fasten cloaks and tunics.
