Onyx and Diamond Ring

$2,000.00
About Details Inspiration

The ancients used onyx for carving cameos, and the durability of the stone meant that many of those millennia-old pieces are still intact today.  It's a strong enough material to securely hold a diamond, which is what we did here, in the style of a 1930's ring we once had in our shop.  The high base lets plenty of light pour into the antique diamond from the bottom.  To further highlight the stone, we've mounted it in a white gold bezel - this is an old jeweler's trick to make a diamond look dazzlingly white.

Even in Roman times, the black color of onyx was usually enhanced by man. More than 2000 years ago, Roman historian Pliny described a traditional technique for darkening onyx that is still in use today. The onyx is soaked in sugar water, then placed in strong acid. After boiling for two hours, the acid eats away the sugar and water, leaving pure black carbon.  This technique is still in use.
