The Victorian more-is-more sense of aesthetics applied to everything, including utilitarian tools such as the compass fob. Nothing was unfit to be adorned, not even if it was meant to live out of sight in a pocket on the end of a fob chain - such is the case with this working compass mounted in silver with a niello design on the backside.
900 silver (marked), niello, new sterling silver chain
Very good - gold wash on the decorative spheres is worn in places
1 1/8" length including the bale, 7/8" width, 18" chain (need to add)
