This Ancient Roman zoomorphic fibula (aka brooch) is modeled in the shape of a dolphin. The dolphin shows up frequently in Roman mythology as messenger of Neptune. According to myth, Neptune rewarded the dolphin for finding and persuading his beloved Salacia to be his wife by giving it a place in the heavens - the constellation Delphinus. In early Christian belief, the dolphin symbolized resurrection and salvation. Fibulas like this one were commonly used to fasten cloaks and tunics. This piece comes with a certificate of authenticity.
