Ancient Egyptian Faience Scarab Necklace

About Details

In ancient Egypt, small decorative ceramic scarab beetles like this one were produced in vast numbers for centuries. Thousands have survived intact. Scarabs represented the sun god, Ra, and in a larger sense reminded the wearer of the holy cycle of regeneration and rebirth. Victorians especially loved to wear ancient Egyptian scarabs - this specimen, in fact, still retains the 9k gold finding attached by a jeweler in the late 1800's. As was typical for this style of ceramic bead, a hieroglyph is inscribed on the back which may have been used as an impression seal. I don't know exactly what this one says, but it could be a name, an official title, or a prayer like "With Ra there is nothing to fear". We've hung it from a new slender gold chain.
