Diamond Baguette Band (Rose Gold)

About Details Inspiration

I assumed that baguette cut was named after the elongated French bread shape, but that's not true. The word baguette wasn't used to describe bread prior to 1900, but the word bague has been in use for centuries. In high school, I learned it as the word for "finger ring". However, until the seventeenth century the term was used to indicate jewels in general. Therefore the diminutive 'baguette' is translated as 'small jewel'. Here, nine of them line up in a tidy row.

The baguette cut evolved from the hogback, an earlier slender diamond shape in use since the 16th century which had either a ridge along the top or a simplified crown with a single row of "steps" and a long, rectangular table. The baguette was simply a hogback with the top flattened to form a table facet.
