Early Victorian Black Dot Paste Eternity Ring

$750

Sold!

Eternity rings from the 1840s are hard to come by, and while diamond-set examples are the most sought after, this one uses paste gems—and was meant to fool the eye. In the early Victorian era, paste (a hand-cut, leaded glass) was the best available diamond imitation. A layer of silver foil behind each stone, along with painted black dots to simulate depth, gave the illusion of sparkle and brilliance. The gems are set in silver collets, just as real diamonds would have been, with a gold wash applied to the underside to prevent tarnish against the skin. Designed to deceive!
