Early Victorian Running Fox Watch Key Fob

Nineteenth century jewelers never missed an opportunity to ornament any object including something as utilitarian as a watch key. This Victorian gold watch key fob is modeled in the lithe form of a fox on the run, the key tucked under its chin and an amethyst beneath its tail. Is it whimsical? Yes, but this fob was designed to be functional as well as amusing - the fox rotates in its mounting to allow for easy watch-winding. There's a small repair on one of its haunches and the engraved fur detail is worn at the hips, this object was clearly used often and well loved.
