The Victorians and Edwardians never missed an opportunity to ornament any object, including something as utilitarian as a compass. This compass is mounted gold, the design presages the Art Deco period to come. The glass over the compass is relatively unblemished and you can still see the hand-lettered directions on the face well enough to find your way around. Well, maybe don't use this compass to go off the grid and try to survive in the woods, but it seems to be working well enough for us.
