In the northern hemisphere the migration of the swallow is one of the early signs of spring and signals the fertile period to come. According to lore, swallows were a welcome sight to voyage-weary sailors who believed the little birds prevented ships from getting lost and led them into safe harbor. This late 19th century festoon features a pair of swallows holding a tiny flower with a pendant seed pearl.
