Essex Crystal Vice Commodore Flag Necklace

$1,400

Sold!

Benzie of Cowes, the "yachtsmen's jeweler," was founded by on the Isle of Wight in 1862 by Simpson Benzie. He specialized in nautical-themed jewelry and counted the British Navy and Royalty among his patrons. This mint condition Essex crystal pendant was undoubtably a special commission and features the Vice Commodore's flag for the Royal Southern Yacht Club. Essex crystal aka reverse carved crystal is made by carving images into the base of rock crystal cabochons and then (carefully) hand painting them. The subtle distortion created by the crystal makes the images beneath appear three dimensional. The reverse side of the pendant is stamped with the Benzie Cowes makers mark.
