Georgian Enamel & Diamond Poissarde Earrings

$3,500

Sold!

"poissarde" is a historical term for Parisian fishwives and market women who were politically active during the French Revolution. On one hand, it's a way to refer to women with a coarse manner. On the other, the poissardes were a significant political force, traveling to Versailles twice a year to meet with the king and appearing at special occasions. In 1789, they led the Women's March on Versailles to protest the price and scarcity of bread. They may -or may not- have worn earrings like these.
