Trophy jewelry, like this Jugenstil deer teeth brooch, traces its origins to the charivari animal charms of Bavaria. These talismans were made from teeth, talons, antlers, etc, and were believed to bring luck on the hunt, protect the wearer from harm, and imbue the hunter with the traits of the animal. This small-scale piece straddles 19th and 20th century styles in a rare and wonderful way.
