British hallmarks tell us this heavy chain was made in 1896. Other hallmarks include a date letter and maker's mark on the toggle. Every link is stamped with the lion passant. Known as a "double Albert chain" after Prince Albert who supposedly popularized the accessory, it would have been worn by a man with the T-bar inserted into a vest buttonhole. A pocketwatch would be attached to one dog clip and some fobs or a watch-winding key to the other. Both would go in separate side pockets, creating a W-shaped swag shape. But it makes a great necklace, too.
