Pre Revolution Russian “Caucasus” Souvenir Brooch

The Caucasus is the region that forms the bridge between Europe and Asia. Bordering Iran, Turkey, and Russia (all great conquering empires in their day), this part of the world was occupied by many different peoples and hotly contested by various invaders throughout the course of history. In the early 19th century the Ottomans and the Persians ceded the Caucasus to Imperial Russia, and part of Russia it stayed through the end of the 20th century and the dissolution of the USSR. This niello silver brooch is a piece of souvenir jewelry for Russian vacationers to the area. "Caucasus" is rendered in old Slavonic lettering with a turquoise-studded anchor at the center and a pendant silver orb. Russian hallmarks.
