From the mid-18th century until the mid-19th century, India was under British rule (or "Raj", in Hindustani). British traders, colonists, and tourists traveling to India might go on safari and hunt exotic game from the back of an elephant, and to celebrate they'd commission jewelry made from their mighty mount's hair. Here's a remarkable example of that trend: a nearly mint set of bangles with five concentric circles of thick, flexible elephant hair and six gilt silver elephants. The box (included) is original to the set.
