The occultist, spiritualist, and radical Socialist Eliphas Levi considered the 5-pointed star (or pentagram) to be a symbol of the microcosm, or human. In his 1855 masterwork Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, he drew upon ancient mystical traditions (Tarot, for instance) and very old magical practices (Kabbalah, etc) to back this up - check out his wacked-out but beautiful illustration in the thumbnails at left. He was the first person to declare that a pentagram with one point down and two points up represents evil, while a pentagram with one point up and two points down represents good.
