Victorian Double-Sided Guinea Locket
Sold!

THESE NEARLY PURE (22k) gold guineas, each valued at £1 + 1 shilling, were minted during George III's reign. At the time, a single coin was nearly a week's wages for the average laborer. Today, their scrap value alone is worth hundreds of dollars. Weighing almost exactly 1/4 oz of nearly pure gold, these surviving rare coins are now valued in the thousands. The name "guinea" comes from the West African region where much of the gold for British coins was sourced. During the Victorian period, some clever numismatist repurposed these coins into lockets. Buttery, heavy, rich old gold.
