Rings emblazoned with the word "MIZPAH" were popular in the 19th century; this biblical word signified a bond and meant, roughly, "I feel close to you even though we're far apart". They were exchanged between friends, family members or lovers who were going to be separated for a period, like when a sailor went on a long sea voyage. Here, the Eye of Providence adds a special layer of protection to an already talismanic jewel. The all-seeing-eye is now closely associated with the Freemasons, but it also symbolizes God's omnipresence and benevolent oversight.
