Essex crystal aka reverse carved crystal is made by carving images into the base of rock crystal cabochons and then (carefully) hand painting them. The subtle distortion created by the crystal makes the images beneath appear three dimensional. This unusual, custom-made Essex crystal pendant features a crest on one side and the initials "HP" on the other. The crest (possibly belonging to either the Hume or Huxley families) is a ducal coronet with a demi-lion rampant holding a crosslet.
