This pearl-framed locket holds tons of clues: one, the owner's initials were "RB", as we know from the engraving at the back. But my favorite way to learn the provenance of a particular jewel is when the original box has stuck around. Here's what I can find out about "The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co." which was located at 112 Regent Street, London: "This large business of retail jewelers and silversmiths was established in 1880. The original partners were William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman. Following the absorption in 1893 of the Goldsmiths' Alliance Ltd, the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co was converted into a limited liability company. In 1952 the company was amalgamated with Garrard & Co." OK! They're still in biz today, but their former location on Regent Street is now occupied by a clothing store with the unfortunate name of "Moose Knuckles."
