This outstanding (and rare!) Victorian piece features a beautifully carved skull and crossbones intaglio with smooth contours and a lovely sense of depth. The use of skull imagery is a bit unusual for the time this piece was made (c. 1870), and is evocative of the memento mori amulets and rings popularly worn from 16th century through the early 1800s. Originally the head of a stickpin, we have converted it into a ring.
14k gold (tests), carnelian, new 14k gold shank
