Victorian “Souvenir” Locket

$1,600

Sold!

THIS HAND-PAINTED locket shows a woman inscribing the word souvenir beneath a tree as a ship sails away in the distance. The idea of the souvenir took hold during the Victorian era, when travel became more accessible and people began collecting and exchanging mementos to mark meaningful moments. In this context, souvenir—from the French for memory—was less about tourism and more about personal remembrance.
