Victorian Telescoping Pencil Cross Pendant

Leave it to the Victorians to take the most utilitarian of objects and embellish, modify, miniaturize and adorn it until its actual usefulness is utterly hidden. This c. 1880 gold cross set with creamy seed pearls is actually a telescoping pencil. The reverse side is engraved "Decie."
