Lapis lazuli has been mined since 4000 BC, and has been prized the world over not only as a decorative stone but also for the ultramarine dye made from ground and powdered lapis. King Tut's sarcophagus was heavily lined with lapis lazuli, Michelangelo favored the blue paint made from its powder, and Catherine the Great had an entire room in her palace adorned with lapis doors, fireplaces, and picture frames. This remarkable (and sizable!) vintage signet ring features a rectangular lapis slab and stripes of lapis inlay at the shoulders and all along the hoop.
