Lindsay's almost positive this hand is holding an en bloc clip, which are the bullet clips used in the kind of rifles employed in both WW1 and WW2. The dates - 1914 and 1939 - are the years that each of the wars began. The MR could be a military regiment, or maybe someone's initials? And the hallmarks are Dutch. There's a story here for sure, but we only know part of it.
