Late Victorian Pomander Necklace

$1,150

Sold!

Hallmarks on this gold pomander tell us it was made in London in 1897. The city would have been stinky back then. You could have used this perforated orb to hold a wad of cloth, cotton, or a sponge soaked in perfume - holding it to your nose would mask the urban scents of the 19th century. It unscrews so you can insert whatever scent you like - life still stinks sometimes.
