Victorian Tortoiseshell Demeter Cameo Necklace

$1,150

Sold!

This Victorian tortoiseshell cameo depicts Demeter, the Greek goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest. The wheat in her hair is a symbol of abundance and the cycle of life. In the 19th century, tortoiseshell was prized for its warm, organic hues and ability to showcase finely carved details, and you KNOW the Victorians loved mythological themes. The maternal goddess's face has been rendered with incredible skill.
